Can Homeopathy Help with Migraines? The Migraine Link to Solar Plexus Energy

Migraines are linked to Solar Plexus Chakra Imbalance
Migraines can be connected to a strict upbringing

Someone heard me talking about the migraine link to solar plexus energy at a recent event and how homeopathy can help to rebalance the solar plexus and eliminate migraines. After the event was finished he approached me. “My friend has serious migraines. What can I tell her to help her?” The first question I asked was: “Does she come from a strict family?” She did. Now how did I know to ask that? Let me just say up front - it’s not always true - which is why I asked it as a question - but someone who gets frequent migraines often comes from a strict family. In her case, her family was strictly religious and raised her within the confines of a God-fearing environment.

When we take a homeopathy case, family background is always something we ask about because how we were raised has such a big influence on how we react and what we believe. Even if we disagree with our family - in fact - because we disagree with our family - we often suffer greatly both emotionally and physically and the imbalance can last a lifetime if we don’t know how to correct it. A homeopathic case-taking usually lasts between one and two hours. As homeopaths, we are concerned with why your body reacts the way it does and not just the superficial symptom picture - this is why we dig deep to get to know on a level that gives us a complete picture of where you are in your life and how you react to life events. With this knowledge we can match you to a remedy that will support your healing on all levels - mental/emotional as well as physical.

How Digestive Health, Anxiety, and Migraines Intertwine

The solar plexus chakra—Manipura in Sanskrit—is the energetic center associated with personal power, self-esteem, and confidence. It governs not only our sense of identity and autonomy but also the physical region of the body that includes the digestive organs, the stomach, and the liver. When this chakra is imbalanced—whether through chronic stress, suppressed emotion, or disempowering family dynamics—it often manifests as disturbances in both digestion and emotional regulation. Homeopathy is an energetic medicine. It operates in all of the body’s systems - mind, body and spirit, helping to rebalance chakra energy and restore hormone balances as well. For this reason it not only helps to eliminate physical symptoms but, through hormonal and energetic rebalancing, it creates shifts within us that make it easier for us to develop healthy boundaries in our relationships and maintain them.

The Physiological Bridge: The Gut–Brain Axis

Modern science increasingly supports what ancient systems like Ayurveda have long understood: the gut and the mind are deeply interconnected. The gut contains an extensive network of neurons known as the enteric nervous system, often referred to as our “second brain.” About 90% of the body’s serotonin—a key neurotransmitter that influences mood, sleep, and even pain perception—is produced in the gut. This serotonin is not only used locally but also affects the central nervous system through the gut–brain axis, a two-way communication system mediated by the vagus nerve and hormonal signaling.

When the gut is inflamed, sluggish, or under stress, serotonin balance can be disrupted. This affects mood and can heighten anxiety, while also influencing the neurovascular processes that contribute to migraines. Likewise, chronic anxiety and stress can constrict blood vessels, alter hormone levels, and dysregulate digestion—creating a feedback loop between emotional tension, digestive distress, and head pain. Homeopathy helps your body rebalance seratonin production naturally without drugs, probiotics or synthetic hormones. Drugs have side effects and overuse of probiotics can create long term disruptions in the digestive process risking a worsened condition in the long term after short term relief. Homeopathy has no side effects and, when thoughtfully prescribed by a professional, is safe for those with delicate digestive systems as well as fragile emotional states.

Psychological and Energetic Patterns: The Impact of Upbringing

From an energetic and psychological perspective, individuals raised in overly strict, controlling, or perfectionistic families often internalize the message that their autonomy or self-expression is unsafe. To maintain belonging or avoid criticism, they suppress anger, repress desires, and become hypervigilant about others’ expectations. Suppressed emotions lead to chronic health issues. Similarly, overuse of traditional medicines ultimately suppresses symptoms leading to toxicity and inflammation.

Energetically, this pattern weakens the solar plexus chakra—the center of personal will and self-worth. Physiologically, the chronic stress response that accompanies this suppression keeps the body in a state of tension: the diaphragm tightens (limiting breath and energetic flow through the solar plexus), digestion slows or becomes erratic, and the nervous system remains on high alert. This continual sympathetic activation predisposes the individual to anxiety, digestive dysfunction (such as IBS or gastritis), and tension-based migraines.

Homeopathy supports the body’s release of toxins caused by emotional and medicinal suppression, allowing the person to regain their composure, return to good health and fortify themselves against migraines and anxiety attacks.

Migraines as a Manifestation of Energetic Conflict

Migraines specifically, in this context, can be understood as a kind of internal “pressure valve” — the body’s way of expressing conflict between external compliance and internal resistance. The energy that cannot move freely through the solar plexus (due to fear of asserting oneself or setting boundaries) often rises upward, creating congestion and pressure in the head. In this way, migraines symbolically and somatically represent unexpressed personal power—energy that wants to be reclaimed and grounded in the body. A well-matched homeopathic remedy assists the mind, body, spirit complex to slowly release pent up pressure resulting in more refreshing sleep and a more relaxed state while awake.

Rebalancing the Solar Plexus

Healing this pattern involves both physical and energetic work:

  • Diet: Clean eating is essential for migraine sufferers. Foods high in preservatives, coloring and other additives are particularly linked to migraines, with the number one culprit often cited as citric acid. Others include sulfites, nitrates and nitrites, msg, and artificial sweeteners. Certain clean foods like dairy, cured meats and pickled foods can also be triggers. Results are very individual. Keeping a journal might help you identify your personal migraine triggers. Log food as well as stressful interactions.

  • Nervous system regulation: Literally take a deep breath. Go for a walk. Do a five minute grounding meditation, (such as this one) yoga, Qi-gong or tai chi. Whatever it takes to bring the body back to homeostasis and a point of feeling grounded.

  • Energy and Breath Work: practices such as meditation, qigong, Reiki, Biofield Tuning ease stress, improve energy flow and strengthen self-confidence and personal will.

  • Therapeutic work: Learning to set and maintain boundaries, express anger safely, express your needs and reclaim autonomy without guilt, building self confidence.

  • Homeopathy: Homeopathy helps to shift the personality into a more confident version of itself while, at the same time, providing physical remediation for headaches, digestive upsets and other physical manifestations of stress such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Case Study: Migraines and Liver Pain

Michael consulted me after testing high for liver enzymes at his yearly physical. He had a stressful job, working with a co-worker who was not pulling his weight which caused Michael to have to work harder, and he frequently suffered migraines. He described his migraine headaches like a clap of thunder that came on suddenly, followed by excruciating pain and intense pressure in his head. Once they came on, they interfered with his relationship with his wife, becoming worse after intimacy.

We discussed the stress factors in his work and how he handled them. Michael is an honest guy who believes in putting in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay and he takes his responsibilities seriously. Working with a slacker was irritating and frustrating. Michael felt the balance of responsibility was not equal but knew he had to do more than his fair share or risk looking bad in front of his boss - who viewed the two as a team. He sometimes worked overtime without his co-worker to pick up the slack. Outside of work he enjoys traveling to Florida with his wife and spending time at the beach. He describes himself as outgoing and friendly. When his parents got divorced his twin brother was sent to live with his father, and he remained with his mother and grandmother. He says his grandmother was pretty strict with him and they did not have a lot of money for the things they needed. Being separated from his twin also took it’s toll on his emotional wellbeing. His focus in life now as an adult is staying ahead financially so that his children don’t lack for anything, and he values his relationship with his wife and wants the family to stay together.

I selected a homeopathic remedy that was well matched to a person who takes his responsibilities seriously and gets frustrated when those around him don't do the same. This remedy has action on liver and gallbladder issues as well as migraines and headaches related to frustration and stress.

After the first dose of his homeopathic remedy, Michael began to get some relief from the migraines and also from the pain in his liver. With continued treatment, he had fewer migraines and the severity lessened. 3 months after beginning homeopathic treatment, his liver enzyme test results were much improved. His doctor gave him a clean bill of health. He was sleeping better. Two months later he reported that his migraines had stopped, his liver pain had gone and he recognized that when he got off work he could switch out of “work mode” into “family mode” so that the stress of the job did not follow him home. Homeopathy helped Michael both physically and mentally. Through our consultations he grew to understand how his conscientiousness at work was affecting his health and was able to make adjustments to the way he handled work pressures.
